Motivation

“To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end in life."
– Baruch Spinoza

There is a line from a Stephen Sondheim musical called “Follies” and it goes like this… “sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor not going left… not going right.”

For many of the people with ADHD that confusion about which way to go is a lifelong struggle. They somehow feel that if only they had that clear motivation or if they just loved to do "that one special thing" like so many others, then they would finally be able to get off there ass and do what they know they need to do. They become their own biggest whipping boy and sink into the sadness that further saps their energy and motivation.

Many of my clients who have ADD berate themselves because they don't seem to have the motivation to go after what they want. Instead, they get sidetracked, lose focus, start things they never finish, maybe sit on the couch and play video games and oftentimes do what seems to be "easy" rather than what is necessary. They simply don't understand how other people do it. "What is wrong with me?!?
